Gambia (the)



Gambia achieved independence on 17 February 1965 and its instrument of succession to the 1949 Geneva Conventions was received by the depositary on 11 October 1966. Legislation relating to grave breaches, trial procedures and emblem protection are covered by the UK Geneva Conventions Act (Colonial territories) Order of 1959 Database 'IHL - National Implementation', View 'Maintenance\0b. ALL by Status', Document 'Geneva Conventions Act (Colonial Territories) Order in Council, 1959' which extended to colonial territories the applicability of the UK Geneva Conventions Act of 1957 Database 'IHL - National Implementation', View 'Maintenance\0b. ALL by Status', Document 'Geneva Conventions Act 1957 (as amended)'. An Ordinance in Gambia of 1 September 1959 modified this 1959 UK Order. The Geneva Conventions (Amendment Act) of 1995 is not, however, applicable in Gambia.
