Women: taking control of their own destiny
Contrary to certain preconceived ideas, women affected by conflicts are not passive victims. They put their energy and expertise into improving their day-to-day life and strengthening their community.

With the end of hostilities in Sierra Leone in 2000, the ICRC distributed vegetable seeds and tools to groups of single women affected by the conflict in the Freetown area. In all, more than 100,000 women have benefited from this programme throughout the country.
With the introduction of innovative marketing and market gardening techniques, most of the women were able to boost production and generate greater profit, thus consolidating their place in society. Sierra Leone, 2002.
