| In many countries, women maimed by mines or explosive remnants of war have little chance of getting married. Some people believe that those already married are no longer able to assume the tasks traditionally assigned to wives and mothers. Sometimes abandoned, often without money, these women have to attend to their children’s basic needs, in addition to overcoming the trauma of the accident.
In this picture, a woman amputee supplements her husband’s income by making clothes. She will sell these at the local bazaar thanks to a loan through the ICRC's micro-credit programme. Afghanistan, 2002.
