Women: taking control of their own destiny
Contrary to certain preconceived ideas, women affected by conflicts are not passive victims. They put their energy and expertise into improving their day-to-day life and strengthening their community.

How best to increase the food supply to displaced persons in Darfur? The answer did not come from ICRC delegates, but from the women to whom the question was asked: "Get us some pigeons!"
The pigeon is a major source of protein, reproduces quickly, and can find food on its own. When villages are attacked, they fly away, only to come back once calm is restored. This project is under study. Sudan, 2004.
