Women: taking control of their own destiny
Contrary to certain preconceived ideas, women affected by conflicts are not passive victims. They put their energy and expertise into improving their day-to-day life and strengthening their community.

An ICRC delegate makes her way through a camp for displaced persons in Liberia to check on the water pumps installed by the organization. Since, most of the time, women are responsible for fetching water for their communities, ICRC engineers consult them before implementing projects.
The pumps and wells are installed in places where women are least vulnerable to attack, and insofar as possible, close to where they live, to avoid long and often arduous journeys. Women are trained on how to keep water points clean and operational. Monrovia, 2002.
