Uganda: improving the lives of over half a million displaced people
It is estimated that the decade-long conflict in Uganda has forced over 1.7 million people from their homes into camps for the displaced. In February-March 2007, the ICRC distributed substantial aid to some 560,000 displaced people currently living in camps, returning to their homes or resettling after years of displacement.

Traditional midwives and health personnel in the ICRC health centre in Arum displaced camp, Pader district – An ICRC midwife regularly works alongside traditional midwives in six of the camps in the district. Although many traditional midwives have been practicing their calling for years, the ICRC support is in most cases the first time that they have received any vocational training. They are trained in antenatal care, safe delivery, cases of sexual violence and HIV/AIDS. Women in the camps turn to midwives with an array of difficulties concerning sexuality, domestic violence, pregnancy and their children's upbringing.
