The numbers of people affected by disappearances can be staggering. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, over 13,000 people are still missing, but that figure should be multiplied by ten or even twenty to take into account the family and extended family members faced with the virtually insurmountable task of moving on. During 2003 and 2004, the ICRC organized the systematic collection of ante-mortem data for missing persons. This data helps to identify remains exhumed from mass graves. The data is then used to confirm the findings of post-mortem examinations and DNA analysis of human remains. It helps to identify the dead, thereby bringing answers to the concerned families.
