Bomba Alta, Huambo, 1980. ICRC-supported limb-fitting and rehabilitation centre
The ICRC has been present in Angola since 1975, the year which marked the outbreak of the conflict that has been devastating the country for almost 30 years.

Since the Luena peace agreement was signed in 2002 the ICRC has gradually been reducing its activities and its presence in the country as humanitarian needs have decreased. It has handed over its physical rehabilitation programme to the Angolan Ministry of Health and has ended its action to restore family links, having first provided the authorities with a list of persons still being sought, including unaccompanied children.

The Luanda delegation was closed in June 2009, and the ICRC is now pursuing its activities in Angola through its regional delegation in Pretoria, South Africa. The organization is continuing to visit people who have been deprived of their liberty in Cabinda Province and to share its recommendations regarding the conditions and treatment of detainees with the authorities. The ICRC is also endeavouring to support the Angola Red Cross in its efforts to restore family links and to raise people's awareness of the dangers of antipersonnel mines and explosive remnants of war.
