Armenia: Summer course on international humanitarian law
The American University of Armenia (AUA) and the ICRC are currently holding a course on international humanitarian law (IHL) for 24 university students and young lawyers. The course provides a comprehensive introduction to the subject, combining lectures and case studies.

"The course is designed to familiarize participants with the basic provisions of IHL. It will also provide them with an opportunity to exchange views with experts in the field and to discuss the obstacles to implementation in conflict zones," said James Reynolds, head of the ICRC delegation in Armenia.

The purpose of IHL is to minimize the suffering caused by armed conflicts, in particular by imposing limits on the means and methods of warfare used.

During the course, leading national and international experts will discuss the history and development of IHL, the protection it provides for people and objects during armed conflicts, the means and methods of warfare permitted and the implementation of IHL at national level.

"This is the first time we have organized such an event in Armenia," said Vahan Bournazyan, IHL lecturer at the AUA. "We believe that the knowledge of IHL acquired during the course will help motivated students and young professionals to better address humanitarian issues."
