Qom. Conference on Islam and humanitarian law (November 2006).
In Iran, the ICRC is helping in efforts to establish what happened to prisoners of war (POWs) taken during the 1980-88 war with Iraq who were either registered or identified through Red Cross Messages, and whose subsequent fate is unknown.

It supports the Iranian Red Crescent Society in the fields of tracing, promotion of international humanitarian law (IHL) and in raising public awareness of unexploded ordnance. It works in cooperation with the Iranian Committee for the Implementation of IHL.

The ICRC has a logistical supply base in western Iran to support its operations in Iraq. It has been working in Iran since 1977, with some interruptions.

Presence (2009): 53 staff, including 4 expatriates

Twenty years after the end of the Iran-Iraq war, tens of thousands of combatants still unaccounted for
On 16 October the governments of Iran and Iraq, together with the ICRC, signed a memorandum of understanding that represents an important step towards easing the heavy burden of tens of thousands of bereaved Iraqi and Iranian families. The document establishes a clear framework for collecting information and sharing it between the two countries, and for handing over mortal remains. These tasks will be performed jointly by experts from both countries with ICRC support.
