ICRC delegate meeting with a detainee
The ICRC in Algeria carries out visits to people held in places of detention of the Ministry of Justice and to people remanded in custody in police stations and gendarmeries.

It works to promote international humanitarian law (IHL) among Algerian civil society, the authorities and the armed forces and provides support to the Algerian Red Crescent.

The ICRC has been working in Algeria, with some interruptions, since the 1954-1962 war of independence. It opened a delegation in the country in 2002, to enable closer follow-up of its activities.

Presence (2009): 14 staff, including 4 expatriates
