The ICRC has been working in Armenia, in the context of the Nagorny Karabakh conflict, since 1992 and continues to monitor the situation of civilians living along the international border with Azerbaijan.

It focuses on the issue of missing persons and the problems of people held in connection with the conflict as well as other vulnerable detainees. The delegation supports the authorities in efforts to halt the spread of tuberculosis in prisons.

The ICRC also promotes the implementation of international humanitarian law (IHL) and its integration into the training of the armed and security forces and into university and school curricula. It supports capacity-building within the Armenian Red Cross Society.

In Nagorny Karabakh it also gives support to primary health care services.

Nagorny Karabakh: the lasting consequences of an unresolved conflict
Twelve years after the cease-fire between Armenia and Azerbaijan, ICRC protection and assistance activities continue. The fate of thousands of missing persons remains unknown. Mines and unexploded ordnance continue to kill and maim. Many displaced persons have still not been able to go home.
