Guinea: mass casualty evacuation exercise in Conakry
Conakry (ICRC) – The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the Red Cross Society of Guinea, the Guinean health ministry and community medical centres conducted an emergency plan activation exercise on 4 June.

The aim of the exercise was to handle a mass influx of casualties.

This particular operation covered the pre-hospital phase: evacuation, initial care and triage. The exercise took place at Bellevue Heliport and simulated a major road traffic accident. Volunteers from the Red Cross Society of Guinea immediately took charge of 40 “casualties” and arranged transportation to Ratoma and Minière community medical centres.

Observers from the ministry of health, Donka Hospital and the Red Cross Society of Guinea monitored the various phases of the simulation. This type of exercise aims to enhance the implementation and effectiveness of the emergency response plan.

Mouktar Soumah has been a volunteer with the Red Cross Society of Guinea since he was 10. He sees this type of training as crucial: “These exercises enable us to hone our skills by simulating real-life situations and putting us in a disaster situation. There is no shortage of training courses, but the essential thing is to put all that training into practice.”
