Evacuation of wounded persons during the September 2009 incidents of violence in Conakry
The ICRC has been active in Guinea since 1970 and it established a permanent delegation in Conakry in 2001.
The ICRC's operations in the country comprise visiting detainees, improving access to drinking water, supporting health facilities and restoring family links (between relatives within Guinea and in neighbouring countries). The ICRC promotes international humanitarian law to the armed and security forces, public officials, the media, academics and the general public. The ICRC cooperates with the Red Cross Society of Guinea in order to strengthen the Society's ability to respond to operational emergencies, restore family links and spread knowledge of basic humanitarian principles. During the violence that shook Conakry in September 2009 and led to numerous civilian deaths and injuries, the ICRC and the Red Cross Society of Guinea responded to the most urgent medical needs by facilitating the evacuation of the wounded and their treatment in local hospitals. The ICRC's operations are run by its permanent delegation in Conakry and its sub-delegation in Nzérékoré. Since 2009 the Conakry delegation has also supervised the ICRC's activities in Sierra Leone.
