| Section The ICRC in Guinea-Bissau This country is covered by the regional delegation in SenegalThe ICRC in Senegal The ICRC has been working in Guinea-Bissau since 1998. At that time, the organization’s aim was to meet the needs of those affected by the country’s civil war. It focused on assisting the civilian population, visiting people deprived of their freedom, and restoring links between those separated by the conflict. Today, the ICRC continues to visit detainees and endeavours to raise awareness of international humanitarian law among the political authorities and armed forces of Guinea-Bissau. In the north of the country, the ICRC is assisting local residents and refugees from Casamance, a Senegalese region ravaged by armed violence. This involves providing better access to clean drinking water and adequate sanitation, and helping to re-start some of the local economic activities. The ICRC works in cooperation with the Red Cross Society of Guinea-Bissau to boost its capacity in emergency preparedness and response, restoring family links, and first-aid training. 15-4-2009 Guinea-Bissau: struggling to survive on Jobel islandThe inhabitants of Jobel are fighting a daily battle against the elements. There is no drinking water and the island is being assailed by the ocean. But from now on, they can count on ICRC support. The organization is constructing rainwater tanks and aims to help improve the fishing yield. By early October, 9,843 cases had been recorded and the death toll had risen to 178. The epidemic has hit mainly the south west of the country and the capital, Bissau, where various agencies have been working. In the isolated enclave of Sao Domingos, the ICRC has been mobilizing and training volunteers from the Guinea-Bissau Red Cross and supporting their efforts to fight the disease.
