The ICRC first established a presence in Indonesia in 1979.
The ICRC and the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) were among the first organizations to respond to the emergency caused by the tsunami in December 2004. However, the ICRC has now returned to more traditional activities related to conflict and post-conflict situations. 1-4-2005 Indonesia: ICRC field hospital in AcehLast December's tsunami left about 500,000 people displaced in Indonesia's Aceh province. In Banda Aceh, the health infrastructure was badly hit with many of the 'puskesmas' (primary health care centres) destroyed. In January, the ICRC, together with the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) and Norwegian Red Cross, set up a 100-bed field hospital in the Lhong Raya stadium.
