Against a background of chronic instability and extreme poverty in the Solomon Islands, the ICRC maintains its contacts with the authorities, the Solomon Islands Red Cross and elements of civil society.

In 2002 the ICRC supported the national Red Cross relief programme, providing assistance to some 350 families displaced because of violence on the southern side of the main island of Guadalcanal (known as the Weather Coast). The ICRC also visited prisoners detained in connection with the violence and provided basic assistance to the jails.

With ICRC support, the local police force has included international humanitarian law and human rights law in its training programmes. A training session was also held in 2002 for officers of the prison service
