ICRC headquarters in Geneva
réf. bat-d-00010-01h

Switzerland – and specifically Geneva – is the “home” of the ICRC, which was founded in the lakeside city in 1863 by members of a public welfare association. Since then the ICRC’s headquarters has remained in Geneva.

While the ICRC has always been an entirely private and independent organization under Swiss law, it has had a unique relationship with the Swiss authorities which – at the Committee’s prompting – convened the diplomatic conference that drew up the first Geneva Convention in 1864.

The Swiss government became the Depositary State for the Geneva Conventions, and Switzerland has long been a major donor to the ICRC’s operations.

The ICRC has also been operational in Switzerland – for example in visiting foreign military and civilian internees in World War II, and in visiting Soviet army personnel who had been captured by Afghan fighters during the 1980s and temporarily interned in Switzerland prior to their release.

Since the 1990s the ICRC has had a formal diplomatic agreement with the Swiss government, re-affirming its independence and giving it a status similar to that enjoyed by other international organizations.

Just 150 years ago, Swiss businessman Henry Dunant happened to witness the aftermath of one of the most brutal battles of the 19th century, at Solferino in what is now northern Italy. The scenes of suffering that he witnessed in 1859 led him to take the first steps towards the creation of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.
