| Soroptimist international "Limbs for Life".
In July 1999 Soroptimist International in collaboration with the ICRC launched the project "Limbs for Life". The four-year partnership programme ran from 1999 to 2003 to help landmine victims regain their dignity, reintegrate themselves into society and lead a normal life. |
Members of Soroptimist International across the world raised funds for curative care as well as the physical rehabilitation of landmine victims in Afghanistan, Angola and Georgia. The campaign allowed the ICRC to provide adequate treatment and follow-up care to numerous victims who would not have the means to obtain help elsewhere.
This joint project "Limbs for Life" far exceeded the greatest expectations of either partner. Indeed, by the end of the project's term in 2003, Soroptimist members around the world had raised over 1.87 million Swiss Francs. Funds continue to flow, even after the partnership officially ended, reaching an impressive cumulative total of 2.65 million Swiss Francs in 2004.
