The ICRC has had a permanent presence in Ethiopia since 1977. It responds to needs outstanding from the 1998-2000 international armed conflict with Eritrea and arising from internal armed violence, needs which are often compounded by natural disasters.
The ICRC provides emergency aid, but also implements medium-term assistance projects to preserve the livelihoods of vulnerable communities affected by past conflict, and supports physical rehabilitation services. 30-3-2009 Ethiopia: ICRC activities in 2008The ICRC continued to assist vulnerable communities affected by armed conflict or violence, often compounded by recurrent natural disasters. It also focused on restoring family links, assisting people detained in Tigray and Afar regions and promoting international humanitarian law.
