Sudan: ICRC president asks for support at highest level to help obtain release of kidnapped delegate
Khartoum/Geneva (ICRC) – The president of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Jakob Kellenberger, met in Khartoum today with the president of Sudan, Omar Hassan Ahmad Al Bashir, to discuss efforts to secure the prompt release of ICRC staff member Gauthier Lefèvre, who has been held hostage in Darfur for 110 days.

Iran-Iraq: ICRC helps repatriate remains of Iranian soldiers from 1980-1988 war
Tehran/Baghdad (ICRC) – The remains of nine Iranian soldiers were repatriated today at the Shalamjah border crossing, near Basra, under the auspices of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). More than 20 years after the end of the 1980-1988 Iran-Iraq War, thousands of members of the armed forces of both countries are still unaccounted for.

Somalia: more people forced to flee drought and renewed fighting
Alongside continuous attacks in Mogadishu, fighting has now also broken out in Somalia's central regions, leaving thousands of families displaced. Haiti earthquake: ICRC rushes to get water and medical supplies to survivors
Significant amounts of emergency aid have arrived in quake-struck Port-au-Prince. The challenge now is to get it to survivors as quickly as possible. Further assessments confirm that the damage is widespread and immense. Very few neighbourhoods have been spared, while local infrastructure and services have been wiped out. The ICRC has built latrines for 1,000 people and supplied medical kits for 2,000 patients to two hospitals. Seven truckloads of ICRC medical supplies should arrive in the capital on Sunday evening.

The humanitarian situation remains dire for most of Port-au-Prince's population, following Tuesday's devastating earthquake, which left much of the city in ruins. Afghanistan: war-hit civilians face drought risk
Military operations and bomb attacks continued to kill and injure large numbers of civilians in Afghanistan. The ICRC continued to help health facilities deal with the consequences, providing medicines and helping the wounded rebuild their lives. Efforts to help detainees received a boost when the ICRC visited people in Taliban custody for the first time since 2001.
