Water and sanitation engineering University of Neuchâtel , Switzerland, 18 - 25 April 2009. The Centre of Hydrogeology of the University of Neuchâtel (CHYN) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC - Wathab Service), with the privileged participation of the Graduate Institute of Development Studies (IUED), propose the course on water and sanitation engineering with the aim to enable the participants to acquire the basic technical skills required to conduct their activities as water and sanitation engineers (Watsan). Doctors working in prison: human rights and ethical dilemmas ![]() Online course. Many of those held in prisons around the world do not receive adequate medical care. To improve their access to quality health services, the ICRC has participated in a World Medical Association project to produce an internet-based course for doctors working in prisons. Special Summit on Refugees, Returnees and Internally Displaced Persons in Africa Kampala, Uganda, 19 - 23 October 2009 - The African Union, in collaboration with its key partners, is holding a Special Summit of Heads of State and Government on Refugees, Returnees and Internally Displaced Persons in Africa. The ICRC has been actively involved in the drafting process of the "African Union Convention for the Protection and Assistance to Internally Displaced Persons in Africa" to be adopted in Kampala and will actively participate in the "Special Summit". Events in Switzerland. ![]() Just 150 years ago, Swiss businessman Henry Dunant happened to witness the aftermath of one of the most brutal battles of the 19th century, at Solferino in what is now northern Italy. The scenes of suffering that he witnessed in 1859 led him to take the first steps towards the creation of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. Red Cross and Red Crescent youth declaration Hundreds of youth volunteers, representing the 50 million youth volunteers of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, travelled from Solferino, Italy to Geneva, Switzerland to bring their message to the world. They have gathered to define their vision of humanity and to address the Solferinos of today: poverty, violence, migration, disease, discrimination and climate change. Events in Solferino ![]() From 22 June to 27 June 2009, Red Cross Red Crescent staff and volunteers from more than 150 countries will come together, in Solferino, to reflect on 150 years of action and to examine tomorrow's challenges. SWIRMO 2009 - Senior Workshop on International Rules Governing Military Operations Paris, France, 28 June - 10 July 2009. The Third Senior Workshop on International Rules Governing Military Operations (SWIRMO) will take place at the École Militaire in Paris with the cooperation and support of the French army. SWIRMO 2009 will bring together some 60 senior military officers from around the world to explore principles and problems related to international humanitarian law. The 2009 Jean-Pictet Competition ![]() The Jean-Pictet Competition is a week long training event on international humanitarian law (IHL) intended for students of law and political science, students at military academies, etc., at undergraduate level or above. It consists of “taking law out of the books,” through simulations and role plays, allowing the jury of the Competition to evaluate teams’ theoretical knowledge and practical understanding of IHL. |
