Portfolio : Abkhazia: the Frozen Conflict
The ICRC commissioned photo-journalist Fred Clarke to cover the precarious situation of the civilians in Abkhazia,- a breakaway region of the Republic of Georgia - which remains devastated by the conflict that raged in the years 1992-93.

The Republic of Georgia and specifically its breakaway region of Abkhazia were known at the time of the former Soviet Union as the Soviet Riviera. It enjoyed one of the highest standards of living in the country. Today, this region has one of the very lowest. Abkhazia remains devastated by the conflict that raged in the years 1992-93. Economy has virtually collapsed. Moreover, Abkhazia is seriously depopulated with only 100,000 to 150,000 people left from a pre-war population of over 500,000. Migration continues as people look elsewhere for better opportunities. A high percentage of the population is elderly. People are isolated and the social infrastructure has broken down.

The ICRC commissioned photo-journalist Fred Clarke to cover the precarious situation of the civilians trapped in this frozen conflict.
