Sri Lanka: fisheries project gives life to returnees in the East
As part of its attempts to promote economic security for the returnee population in the Batticaloa district, the ICRC has initiated an inland fisheries project aimed at restoring the livelihoods of more than 480 fishermen who earn a living from fresh water and lagoon fishing.

Gaza is running out of fuel
The current fuel crisis is causing increasing hardship for the people of the Gaza Strip. The ICRC warns that the long-term consequences may be severe if sufficient supplies are not made available to ordinary people and for facilities like public transport, hospitals and water pumping stations.

Afganistan: landmine survivors play football
As the clock counts down to Euro 2008 ™, the ICRC and UEFA have teamed up to help the survivors of landmines in Afghanistan through the www.scorefortheredcross.org campaign. Recently, a group of Afghan landmine victims organized a football match outside the ICRC's orthopaedic centre in Kabul to show their support for the charitable campaign.

Colombia: thousands driven from their homes in 2007
Thousands more people had to flee their homes in Colombia in 2007, due to fighting and death threats. The ICRC assisted more than 66,000 people during the year. Annual report – ICRC boosts aid in face of growing conflict and displacement
Geneva (ICRC) – "The intensification of a number of conflicts around the world in 2006, often accompanied by large-scale internal displacement, caused immeasurable suffering and presented complex humanitarian challenges", said Jakob Kellenberger, the president of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), on launching the ICRC's annual report to donors in Geneva.
