Use of the Search function

Please note: Your search term can appear in a footnote, and it might therefore not be readily visible in the document(s) found.
In order to locate the exact passage in such a case, click on the print icon and use the "find" function of your web browser.

There are two main search functions: Simple and Advanced Search.

1. The Simple Search runs a search in the selected view (either Rules or Practice) on all search terms entered. For instance, when you enter "forced labour", documents containing both words in any order will be retrieved.

Please note that only the first 100 results are displayed.
If your search terms retrieve a larger number of results, you can refine your search criteria by adding search terms or by using the Advanced Search.

2. The Advanced Search function allows you to filter in more details the documents you wish to find.

First select the Part in which the search is to be carried out: Rules or Practice.

Then enter your search term(s) in the text form These words. Click on the arrow to run the search.

There are three Search options:

  • All words will retrieve documents that contain all the words you have entered, in any order. It corresponds to the boolean AND.
For example, entering "forced labour" will retrieve documents containing sentences such as " …. the Forced Labour Convention …. " and also "… the prohibition of forced or compulsory labour …" and " … Convention on the Forced Disappearance of Persons … . …slave labour is also prohibited…"

  • Any word will retrieve documents that contain at least one of the words indicated. It corresponds to the boolean OR.
For example, entering "cease-fire ceasefire" will retrieve documents that match the spelling both with and without the hyphen.

  • Exact phrase will retrieve documents that contain an exact match of the terms entered.
For example, entering "slave labour" will retrieve pages that contain the search terms in that exact order (i.e., the earlier example of " of forced or compulsory labour" will not be retrieved).

Title will retrieve documents where the search term(s) appear in the title, for example, in a Rule title, or in a Chapter title, etc.
For example, entering "target verification" will only retrieve pages where the search terms are part of the title of the document. This field automatically searches for an exact match.

Country allows you to select a specific country from the drop-down menu. The drop-down menu allows you to select one of the countries listed.

Type of practice allows you to select the practice type in which you want to search. The drop-down menu allows you to select one of the different types of practice.

Please note: Only the first 100 results are displayed. If your search retrieves a large number of results, you can refine your search by combining a search, for example with Country or Type of practice.
For example, entering "civilians" in the Title field will retrieve more than 100 results. However, you can narrow down the results by selecting, for example, a specific country and/or a specific type of practice.
