Learning to walk again in Afghanistan

Slideshow published on the BBC website on 15 June 2011. The ICRC Orthopaedic Centre in Helmand is at the heart of Afghanistan's war. Patients used to have to travel hundreds of miles along dangerous roads to reach other centres. But now they can access treatment more easily. The staff are all disabled themselves, and the philosophy behind the centre is as much about social integration as physical rehabilitation. Sidiqullah lost his legs in an improvised explosive device explosion four years ago. Now he works at the centre. This is his story.
