Humanitarians and their moral stance in war: the underlying values

In this article the moral values underlying humanitarian principles are analysed. What were the original moral values, have they changed and to what extent are they in danger today? Has humanity itself become an instrumental value?
Eva Wortel is Assistant Professor of Philosophy and Military Ethics at the Netherlands Defence Academy. She is currently completing a PhD on Civil-Military Relations at the Institute for International Law of Peace and Armed Conflict (IFHV) and the Institute of Development Research and Development Policy at Ruhr University, Bochum.
