As the ICRC appeals for urgent financial support, director of operations Pierre Kraehenbuehl looks back on 2010, when ICRC water, sanitation and construction activities helped some 10 million people, and food was distributed to nearly 5 million. In 2011, with new crises in Libya and Côte d'Ivoire as well as decade-old conflicts, humanitarian needs have reached unprecedented levels.
