Webcast: customary international humanitarian law – from theory to practice

The ICRC hosted a webcast during which legal experts discussed the relevance of customary IHL in their work, how it is being applied in practice, and provided a perspective on the future of this body of law.

  • Who is bound by it? And how can it be enforced?
  • How do non-governmental organizations or international courts and tribunals use customary IHL?
  • What is the methodology used to establish new rules of customary IHL?

Jean-Marie Henckaerts

Jean Marie Henckaerts is Legal Advisor at the International Committee of the Red Cross, based in Geneva, Switzerland. Mr. Henckaerts is co-author of the Customary International Humanitarian Law study published by Cambridge University Press in 2005.

Romaric Ferraro

Romaric Ferraro is Legal Advisor at the International Committee of the Red Cross, based in Bogota, Colombia.

James Ross

James Ross is Legal and Policy Director at Human Rights Watch, where he has worked since 2001. He has worked in the Netherlands, Bosnia,
Cambodia and the Philippines for other human rights and humanitarian organizations.
