8 May concert in Johannesburg's Mary Fitzgerald Square.

The South African campaign launch on 8 May was highly successful, involving the ICRC’s Pretoria Regional Delegation, the Zone Office of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and the South African Red Cross Society.

Volunteers took to the streets of Johannesburg to publicize the work of the Red Cross. At midday, public and volunteers enjoyed a concert in historic Mary Fitzgerald Square with well-known South African Artists Kwela Tebza, Tuks and RJ Benjamin, along with the Soweto Red Cross Choir.

From 24 June to 10 July, an exhibition mixing photos from " Humanity in War, " paintings and the collection " Apartheid " was on view at the old Women's Jail - now a women's centre - at Constitution Hill, Johannesburg.

At the opening, Refiloe Mapetho recited a poem she had written in honour of all detainees around the world.

For many guests, the exhibition was an opportunity to meet again and to remember past hardship.

These former political detainees spoke with Nicolas de Rougemont (bearded), an ICRC delegate who had visited them in Robben Island prison during the apartheid era.
