Paraguay: women supporting their families from behind bars
07-03-2013 Feature
On the occasion of International Women's Day, we are putting the spotlight on the struggles of women deprived of their freedom. Female detainees are often the sole providers for their families, so their detention results in great economic hardship for their loved ones. An innovative income generating project run by the ICRC in Paraguay is helping female detainees support themselves and their families. The women learn to make handicrafts which are sold on visitor's day and made to order for specific clients – giving them a marketable skill and a greater sense of self-worth.
