Eritrea: overview of ICRC activities in 2009

In 2009, the ICRC in Eritrea continued to focus on meeting the needs of people still affected by the 1998–2000 conflict with Ethiopia. However, the delegation faced significant constraints in carrying out its planned activities, including continued restrictions on diesel fuel imposed in April 2008, and new government limitations on the movements of ICRC expatriate staff. Nonetheless, activities carried out included providing over 30,000 people with improved access to safe drinking water through the construction of 16 solar-powered water supply systems.

Promotion of international humanitarian law – local authorities, training of Eritrean Defence Forces, civil society
Cooperation with the Red Cross Society of Eritrea
