Chemical weapons absolutely prohibited

05-04-2013 Interview

Chemical weapons are absolutely prohibited under international humanitarian law. In this interview, ICRC vice-president Christine Beerli explains the ICRC's concerns at allegations about the use of chemical weapons in armed conflicts. She also stresses that highly toxic chemicals cannot be used in law enforcement situations. During the next two weeks (8-19 April 2013), States will meet in The Hague to review the effectiveness of the Chemical Weapon Convention. The ICRC will take part in the conference as an international organization with a long history of advocating the prohibition of chemical weapons.
