General Backround

In 2003 the ICRC launched an international campaign on The Missing to help resolve the problem of people unaccounted for as a result of armed conflict or internal violence and to assist their families.

The aim is to heighten awareness among governments, the military, international and national organizations – including the worldwide Red Cross and Red Crescent network – and the general public about the tragedy of people unaccounted for as a result of armed conflict or internal violence, and about the anguish of their families by creating and making available tools for communication in order to ensure accountability on the part of the authorities responsible for resolving the problem of missing people, to better assist the families and to prevent further disappearances.

Main responsibilities

To contribute towards the implementation of the ICRC's objectives on The Missing by

  • promoting and supporting the effective implementation of relevant forensic standards and tools, including the management and corresponding information applicable to The Missing, including the management of human remains;
  • empowering the national framework where the forensic professionals and other relevant stakeholders should work in the context of The Missing;
  • supporting the ICRC’s regional forensic strategy for the effective implementation of strategies to resolve and prevent the tragedy of the missing

Your tasks

  • to provide specialized advice on human remains and forensic sciences to relevant stakeholders and institutions;
  • to carry out appraisals and assessments on forensics and human remains as required by ICRC field operations;
  • to help define specific objectives and strategies aimed at supporting medico-legal and other external structures relevant to the missing, forensics and human remains;
  • to support ICRC field operations to implement objectives related to the missing and concerning forensics and human remains;
  • to contribute towards the ICRC's policy, strategies and tactics related to the Missing, particularly concerning forensics and human remains;
  • to contribute to the dissemination of all relevant information on the missing, particularly on forensics and management of human remains both within the ICRC and beyond, including the preparation and presentation of appropriate materials for diverse audiences;
  • to actively promote the ICRC's and other relevant international standards applicable to the missing, forensics and management of human remains, including participation and/or organization of appropriate initiatives for this purpose;
  • to train relevant external stakeholders and ICRC staff, on issues related to forensics in data collection and management and management of human remains and data collection;
  • to participate and contribute towards maintaining an optimal team environment necessary to meet growing organizational needs related to the missing, forensics and management of human remains.

Selection requirements

  • prepared to accept non family postings for the first two missions (minimum 12 months each)
  • qualified forensic practitioner with at least 5 years' proven experience of field-work applied to humanitarian or human rights investigations;
  • proven experience in the administration of a medical legal institute/structure and the practise and application of forensic sciences in situations of armed conflict are important assets;
  • proven networking skills and experience in the field of forensic sciences applied to humanitarian or human rights investigations;
  • proven experience in networking and public relations’ skills, particularly applied to the promotion of professional and ethical standards related to the field of expertise proven training experience and skills and capacity to adapt the message to diverse audiences;
  • Excellent level of oral and written English, Arabic an asset;
  • driving licence (must cover manual transmission – a licence for automatic-transmission vehicles only is not sufficient)
