Internship: intern, foreign-language testing (unpaid)

Purpose of the post:

The intern is an active member of the ICRC recruitment unit and works closely with the person in charge of assessing the foreign language capabilities of candidates applying for positions in the field and at headquarters. Currently, all oral, reading and written language tests are conducted at headquarters, and the intern’s assignment is to investigate alternative testing procedures and methodologies.

Main responsibilities:

  • Conduct research into on-line and other methods used worldwide to assess individuals’ knowledge of foreign languages
  • Investigate the possibility of adapting such methods to multiple-language testing, including non-European languages such as Amharic, Pashto, Urdu, and others
  • Based on the research findings, make recommendations regarding alternative methods which may be suitable for assessing the foreign language capabilities of ICRC candidates worldwide
  • Report findings and conclusions in writing to the person in charge of foreign language testing at the ICRC
  • Subsequently, evaluate the effectiveness of the selected testing process

Qualifications and experience:

  • Preferably a Master’s degree, possibly a Bachelor’s degree, in language teaching to foreigners, or in translation and/or interpretation
  • At least 2 years experience in a foreign-language context and/or a multicultural setting

Required skills:

  • Preferably English mother tongue; otherwise near-native knowledge of English essential. • Sound knowledge of French would be an advantage. • Very good knowledge of at least one other language used by the ICRC in the field would be an asset
  • Good computer skills
  • Good oral and writing skills
  • Strong desire to work in a multicultural setting
  • Good organizational skills
  • Ability to meet deadlines
