 Treaty Signing Conference and Mine Action Forum Ottawa, Canada, 2 to 4 December 1997  

Representatives of some 120 States will meet in Ottawa, Canada, to sign the Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production, Transfer of Anti-personnel mines and on their Destruction. In addition, hundreds of non-governmental and international organizations, including the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies will be present. They will also develop an agenda for action on landmines, which will detail activities to be undertaken in support of the universal acceptance of the ban treaty and improvement of mine-clearance and victim-assistance activities.

 ICRC participation at the Conference  

Cornelio Sommaruga, President of the ICRC, will be addressing the opening ceremony of the conference. Other ICRC representatives will be giving presentations at the Mine Action Forum on the following issues:

*development of international humanitarian law

*ratification and national implementation

*victim assistance (medical treatment and community-based rehabilitation)

*mine awareness (perspective from the field)

 Public events  

 Mines in Bosnia and Herzegovina, 4 December, 10.30 a.m.  

Cornelio Sommaruga and Laurence Desvignes will present an overview of the mines problem in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the ICRC mine-awareness programme. 

Venue: Canadian Red Cross tent, public area in front of Government Conference Centre,

2 Rideau Street, Ottawa.

The ICRC stand in the Government Conference Centre will be distributing press kits and documentation.
