New member of ICRC

Geneva (ICRC)  -  At its meeting of 12 October 2000, the Assembly of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) coopted a new member, Mr Jean Abt. The Committee, which is made up of  Swiss citizens, now numbers 23.

Mr Abt, a Swiss citizen, was born in 1938. He studied agriculture and business, and became a professional officer in the Swiss Army. He also studied at the Ecole supérieure de guerre interarmées in Paris. On the Swiss general staff since 1971, Mr Abt was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-General in 1992. He will retire from the Swiss Army on 31 December 2000.

Mr Abt will take up his duties as a member of the ICRC on 1 January 2001.
