 Economic Security Programmes  

 
 

 Kitchen Garden Project in Kabul  

 Assistance to Orphanages in Kabul  

During this period of reporting the ICRC Ecosec team conducted the first round random monitoring, and found that 80% of gardens are currently successful. However, it is feared that the continuing drought will adversely affect the remaining gardens.

 5 local Orphanages accommodating 2,256 Orphans in total received:    

    

 61.05 tons of wheat grain  

 11.52 tons of rice  

 4.2 tons of split peas  

 5.45 tons of ghee  

 Civilian population  

 Internally Displaced Families (IDPs)  

During this reporting period, food rations were provided to:

  • 6,100 selected families in Ghor province.

  • 2,011 families in Mazar province. 

A further 199 flood affected families in Gulbahar were assisted with food and non food items, the actual relief package depending on the level of damage their homes or fields had suffered.

 

  • 890 tents for IDP families in Hera

  • food rations for 276 families. displaced from Khoram Sarbagh and Dar-i-suf in Samangan province.

71 irrigation systems have been rehabilitated in nine provinces (Kabul, Herat, Logar, Paktia, Parwan, Kapisa, Mazar, Kondoz and Ghazni).

 Sapling distribution  

4,200 fruit saplings (apple, apricot and almond) have been distributed to 560 farming householders in Ghazni province.

 Seed distribution  

  • 100 mT of potato seed have been distributed to 1,000 farming households in five provinces (Kabul, Logar, Parwan, Wardak and Ghazni).

  • 40 mT of second crop seed (corn, sesame, beans) have been distributed to 3,400 farming households in eight provinces (Kabul, Herat, Logar, Paktia, Parwan, Kapisa, Mazar and Kondoz).

  • 162.5 mT of wheat grain seed, 162.5 mT of chick pea seed and 3.25 mT of vegetable seed have been distributed to 6,500 farming households in Ghor province .

 Other ICRC's supported health structures in the country  

    

During the second quarter of 2001, the ICRC supported surgical departments in Mazar-e-Sharif, Pul-e-Khumri, Sheberghan, Maimana, Kunduz, Taloqan, Kabul ( Ali-abad, Malalai, Indira Gandhi hospitals) and Panjsher (Rokha and Kapisa hospitals). They were provided with medication, medical and surgical equipment, water and sanitation assistance and generator. Total 5,319 (35% War Wounded) patients were admitted, 42,180* out patients were treated and 2,985 surgical operations were performed in these hospitals. Total 16 first aid posts close to the frontlines were supported regularly, treated 845* patients. (* Figures of months April and May 2001 only.)
