Sri Lanka - Families visit detained servicemen

23-05-2002 News Release 02/21

The LTTE recently allowed the seven Sri Lankan servicemen to receive a visit from their families.

At the ICRC's request, the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) recently allowed the seven Sri Lankan servicemen (six from the army, one from the navy) being held in LTTE custody to receive a visit from their families.

On 20 May, 16 relatives of the detained servicemen left Colombo for the Vanni, where they spent two days with the detainees before returning home. They were accompanied by ICRC delegates, who also provided transport.

The ICRC had been calling on the LTTE to allow this visit for many months. The last time the detainees had received a visit from their families was in February 2000.
