Côte d'Ivoire : First visit to detainees in rebel-held territory

31-10-2002 News Release 02/44

On 23 October, as part of its efforts to help civilian and military victims of the situation in Côte d'Ivoire, the ICRC conducted its first visit to persons detained by the rebels in Bouaké.

The organization has been visiting persons held in connection with the conflict in places under government control since 24 September.

The ICRC visits detainees so as to ensure that their physical integrity is being respected at all times. To that end it registers the detainees and monitors their conditions of detention until  they are released.

The ICRC's findings are confidentially reported to the relevant authorities. The families of detained persons are also informed about the situation of their relatives.
