Further talks on the establishment of an ICRC delegation in Beijing

The following press release was issued by the ICRC delegation in Bangkok on 28 October 2004

The Chinese government and the ICRC have held a third round of consultations in Beijing on the 27 and 28 October on the future establishment of an ICRC regional delegation for East Asia based in Beijing. 
 
Talks were held between the Chinese delegation, headed by Mr Chen Weixiong, Senior Counsellor of the Department of International Organizations and Conferences at the Ministry, and the ICRC delegation, headed by Reto Meister, Delegate-General for Asia and the Pacific. The two sides engaged in a friendly and constructive exchange regarding the establishment of the ICRC regional delegation in Beijing and the future functions and main responsibilities of the ICRC in China. 
 
The ICRC delegation, invited to Beijing by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China, earlier met Mr Li Baodong, the Director-General of the Department of International Organizations and Conferences at the Ministry.
 
Both sides said they were satisfied with the concrete progress made at this round of consultations and have agreed to continue negotiations aimed at reaching final agreement as soon as possible.
