Ethiopia: ICRC delivers aid to displaced people in Gambella
18-05-2005 News Release 05/35
On 11 May the ICRC completed a two-week distribution of maize, beans, oil and agricultural tools to nearly 46,000 displaced people from the Nuer and Anuak communities who had to leave their homes in Ethiopia’s south-western Gambella region earlier this year following renewed clashes among different Nuer communities.
They had been forced to sell most of their cattle and tools to cope with the hardships of displacement.
This aid came at a critical moment: right before the onset of the rainy season, and at a time when the displaced people were running out of even the most basic items needed for survival. The ICRC expects the beneficiaries to be able to grow their own food again after the next harvest.
