Zimbabwe: introducing international humanitarian law to youths

10-03-2006 News Release

From March 6 to 10, the regional delegation's communication delegate toured the three National Youth Service Camps currently operational to introduce young people to International Humanitarian Law (IHL) and the ICRC.

He was accompanied by the National Training Coordinator for the camps, an official from the Ministry of Youth Development and Employment Creation which facilitated the tour. They spoke with a total of 700 youths in the camps of Bordergezi (Mashonaland Central), Vumba (Manicaland) and Dadaya (Midlands).

The camps were established in 2001 by the government to instil patriotic values in the nation's youth. Graduates are for the most part destined to join the army, the police and the civil service. As future arms-carriers and decision makers, they should be familiar with IHL.

This was the third such tour since 2004 that the ICRC has conducted under the aegis of the Ministry of Youth Development and Employment Creation.
