06-06-2002 News Release 02/32

The ICRC is making available a teaching kit for young people between 12 and 20 years of age, consisting of a videocassette and notes for use in classroom discussions of violence.

Geneva (ICRC) – The ICRC announced to Swiss schools today that it is making available a teaching kit, primarily intended for young people between 12 and 20 years of age, consisting of a videocassette and notes for use in classroom discussions of violence. The kit was produced for the " Garden of Violence " exhibition " on the grounds of the Swiss National Exposition ( " Expo.02 " ) in Morat, which was entirely funded by the Avina Foundation (www.avina.net). One thousand videocassettes in French, German and Italian will be donated to schools interested in discussing the issue of violence in connection with a visit to Expo.02 or as part of their syllabus.

The ICRC's aim is to make a concrete contribution to the study of this burning issue and give classes visiting the " Garden of Violence " the opportunity to deepen their understanding of the subject. The teaching kit can be used in conjunction with a special publication prepared by the Swiss Red Cross (www.redcross.ch), the ICRC's partner on this project.

The teaching kit, which is entitled The Exploitation of Violence and the Violence of Exploitation , was produced by the ICRC in cooperation with UNICEF. It contains teaching documents and the videocassette showing two 13-minute films — one on child soldiers, the other on child labour, in which the children involved are given the opportunity to talk about their past experiences and hopes for the future. It also shows scenes of violence filmed in Western countries.

Suggestions and further info rmation for teachers (in French, German and Italian) may be downloaded free of charge from the ICRC's Web site (www.cicr.org/fre/expo02).

Interested teachers may order the videocassettes from the ICRC. The first thousand orders received will be filled at no charge , but orders beyond that number will be invoiced at 25 Swiss francs each.
