ICRC President meets with US officials in Washington DC

Geneva/Washington (ICRC) - The President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Jakob Kellenberger, met in Washington DC on 27 May with Secretary of State Colin Powell, National Security Adviser Dr.Condoleezza Rice, Counsel to the President Judge Alberto R. Gonzales, and Under-Secretary of Defense for Policy Douglas Feith.

The situations in Iraq, in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and in the Near East were at the centre of the discussions.

In relation to Guantanamo, the ICRC President asked the US authorities to institute due legal process and to make significant changes for the more than 600 internees held there.

He also outlined the priorities of the ICRC's current and planned humanitarian activities in Iraq and emphasized the importance of further improving the security situation and maintaining order throughout the country.
