Indonesia: Aid distribution for displaced families in South Sulawesi

05-12-2003 News Release 03/155

The ICRC and the Indonesian Red Cross Society (Palang Merah Indonesia – PMI) have distributed basic household and hygiene items to families displaced as a result of communal tensions that culminated last September in violent incidents in several towns in South Sulawesi province.

The distribution followed a joint ICRC and PMI assessment of the families’ situation. In all, over 1,700 displaced and 250 host families in three districts received aid through their local PMI branches.

The items distributed were chosen in consultation with the provincial and local authorities and the affected communities, with the aim of enabling each of the families to maintain basic standards of hygiene, care for small children and prepare food.
