Sri Lanka: ICRC and Sri Lanka Red Cross Society assist flood victims

17-12-2004 News Release 04/146

The ICRC and the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society (SLRCS) have started distributing emergency supplies such as tarpaulins, buckets, cooking pots, clothes and toiletries to people affected by flooding in the north and east of the country.

Nearly 200 families in Sittandi and another 200 in the Trincomalee District received emergency relief on 16 December, and the two organizations will be starting to distribute aid in Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu Districts soon.

The ICRC and the SLRCS are all the more concerned about the floods because the population is already struggling to cope with the aftermath of the recent conflict.

Field teams from the two organizations are assessing the needs of the affected population in close cooperation with government, UN and non-governmental agencies in the area.
