28 Iranians repatriated from Iraq under ICRC auspices
20-12-2004 News Release No. 04/74
Geneva (ICRC) - On 19 and 20 December, in its capacity as a neutral intermediary, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) repatriated 28 Iranian nationals from Iraq.
The Iranians had been staying at Ashraf camp, which is under the authority of the Multi-National Forces in Iraq. Following a request by all the parties concerned, an ICRC aircraft flew them from the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, to the Iranian capital, Teheran, where they were handed over to the Iranian authorities.
Prior to the operation, ICRC delegates had held private interviews with the 28 men to make sure that they were returning home of their own free will.
