Armenian civilian repatriated under ICRC auspices

15-12-2005 News Release 05/75

Geneva (ICRC) - On15 December, an Armenian woman who accidentally crossed from Armenia into Azerbaijan at the beginning of the month was repatriated under the auspices of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

The operation took place on the road between the Azerbaijani town of Gazakh and the Armenian town of Ijevan.

At the request of the Azerbaijani and Armenian authorities, but in its role of neutral intermediary, the ICRC facilitated the repatriation after ICRC delegates had met the woman and verified that she was returning home of her own free will.

Since the start of its activities in connection with the Nagorny Karabakh conflict in 1992, the ICRC has helped repatriate or transfer 654 people, and the organization will support any similar operation in the future should the need arise.
