Maternity ward built in Madzia and health workers trained in Mindouli

25-12-2006 News Release

The ICRC has just completed a new maternity ward at the Madzia general health-care centre in Kinkala, Republic of the Congo.

After completely upgrading the Madzia health-care centre in 2004, the ICRC has just added a maternity ward comprising a work area, a delivery room, a post-partum room, a midwife’s office and showers and latrines. In 2006, the Madzia facility admitted over 6,500 patients and performed some 200 deliveries. Thanks to ICRC support, the 12,000 people living in the area served by the centre have access to suitable health care.

The ICRC also organized training courses at Mindouli hospital for health-care staff based in Kinkala and Mindouli. A four-day workshop on “safe motherhood and hygiene” was held for 10 midwives from ICRC-supported health-care centres and Mindouli hospital. Those in charge of the centres then attended a two-day course on “collecting and managing medical statistics.” These events were organized in cooperation with health authorities in the Pool region and with the support of Mindouli hospital. The participants came from the health-care centres in Madzia, Matoumbou, Kibouéndé, Massembo-Loubaki, Missafou, Kingouala and Kimanika.

Under the terms of a memorandum of understanding between the health ministry and the ICRC signed on 24 October last, in 2007 the ICRC will continue to provide eight general health-care centres with medicines and basic supplies in addition to supporting continuing education for health workers. The centres serve an area with a population of 50,000 and admit over 3,000 patients per month.
